Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Christy Karach, owner of Christy K Brows and Wax Lounge, located in Cresskill, NJ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own an eyebrow, lash, and skincare studio in Cresskill, where we are super warm and friendly with our clients and absolutely love what we do. We service mostly northern NJ but have some clients drive over an hour to get to us.

Tell us about yourself

I am an uplifter by nature who loves anything beauty, so being in the service industry was a logical choice for me. Eyebrows are my love but making my clients feel beautiful inside and out is what it’s all about. Human connection is vital. It keeps me loving what I do.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

At this point in time, I am booked out for over three months. I have a great reputation that I worked very hard to earn, and that is something that I am so grateful for. And a few celebs have been in my chair, which is also so fun!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I’d say setting boundaries for me is one of the hardest things that comes with owning my own business. I am a people pleaser by nature, and it’s often difficult to say no to clients. But my family and life outside of work are extremely important to me. Finding a healthy balance is the biggest challenge. Clearly defining the boundaries and not crossing them is key.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

My road was not a typical one, so my answers may be a bit unorthodox to those in the business world, but they clearly worked for me.

  1. Be authentic. I have had the same clients for almost 20 years. They have followed me for who I am as a person as much as for the quality of work I do. Being real and connecting with people builds relationships, and that is a great foundation for a business.
  2. Surround yourself with people you trust.
  3. Follow your instincts. They are always right. It’s like an internal guidance system steering you in the right direction for what you want. You just have to pay attention and listen.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

My relationships with my clients over the years mean the world to me. My place isn’t a factory or the kind of place you come and go remaining unknown. We connect. I care about the people in my chair. I want every appointment to be a positive, memorable experience about more than just eyebrows.
