What's your business, and who are your customers?
I work as a mental health provider (a Licensed Professional Counselor) and own my private practice. Besides doing therapy, I also consult with other mental health professionals, do mental health training, and freelance as a writer.
I maintain a blog, too. I use my mental health experience to inform my writing and training. Most of my clients are children, but I also focus on working with caregivers and parents, focusing on self-care.
Tell us about yourself
I wanted to have autonomy. I enjoy being able to have a flexible schedule and routine. I am also mindful of what services I provide. My love for helping others is my main drive for working as a therapist.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment was starting my business! It was daunting, but I found ways to organize my time and tasks so that my goals became attainable.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I think the absence of a "boss" can sometimes lead to less accountability. I have to set reminders to do the "non-fun stuff" of business ownership, such as financial organization, paperwork, etc. I also make sure I have other business owners as mentors and supports.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Find a mentor. Reach out to someone to see if they can provide insights into starting a business in your industry.
- research the rules and laws of your state/country to ensure you are doing everything correctly.
- Be okay and accepting of failure.
