Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Christina Algeciras, Founder of Christina Algeciras Psychotherapy & Wellness, located in Hollywood, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I have a private psychotherapy practice where I help people explore themselves and develop new relationships with themselves and others in a way that cultivates personal growth. Many of my clients are entrepreneurs, high-achieving professionals, creatives, and seekers - they come to me often looking for help with things like anxiety, depression, resolving old traumas, and burnout. Together we work to understand the past and create new futures that bring meaning and purpose to life.

Due to my professional background in both the high pressured corporate world and the wellness space, I have a broad range of tools and understanding of how to support and connect with my clients.

Tell us about yourself

After almost fifteen years in the air logistics industry, I found myself burned out and looking for a new way to live. Yoga and eastern practices had helped me in times of high stress and were instrumental in helping me decide I wanted to do something more rewarding with my life. After taking some time off to travel, I studied to become a yoga teacher and later a holistic health coach. I created my own wellness business, Benestar Wellness, where I worked with children as young as three and adults as old as 93. As my knowledge grew, I found myself wanting to integrate psychotherapy into my work with people so I could help them on a deeper level. I found myself back in school and received a Masters in Mental Health Counseling, after which I opened the psychotherapy component of my business.

I love the work that I do and feel so honored to accompany my clients through their lives. My work feels meaningful, and I also get to continue to learn about myself and others. Continuing to build my skills and knowledge as a therapist is something I really enjoy and expect to continue to do throughout my career.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Opening up a practice a couple of months before COVID, I was still working as a yoga instructor and planned to slowly transition to therapy work, but the universe had other plans for me. It was a huge challenge, but I have grown into a successful private practice, working with clients I love in a relatively short amount of time.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The uncertainty. It can be tough to plan, and you really only have yourself to rely on, but I would not have it any other way. I love the freedom that working for myself affords me.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Go to therapy; I started way before I became a therapist and continue to do so. It helps me in so many ways, and I credit my professional success to my commitment to my personal therapy.
  2. Outsource what is not your forte - think about the value of your time; I outsource my bookkeeping, and it is 100% worth paying someone to do it so I can use that time in other more fulfilling or effective ways.
  3. Continue learning, and invest in the things that bring you alive. It could be an art class or a book on marketing - the perspective of the beginners' mind will keep your mind flexible and creative, and these are vital to personal and professional growth.
