What's your business, and who are your customers?

I write articles and books, mainly on railways, and frequently appear in the media. I also do public speaking. My customers are publishers and editors, but mainly the public at large.

Tell us about yourself

I am a writer and have worked as a journalist all my life, but I became freelance in 1997 - my full biography is on my website. I enjoy my work and have no intention of retiring. I also do not have a decent pension, so the money helps ensure I can maintain my middle-class lifestyle.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Writing 20 books which earn me enough to live on.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Administration of appointments.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Ensure you have some key skills that are worth selling, always be professional in meeting deadlines, etc., and take a measured view of the likely success or failure of the business.
