What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a former educator turned author, speaker, and comedian. I speak to schools, parents, teachers, and counselors about mental health, emotional health, bullying prevention, and conflict resolution. My mission is to build resilient kids! I also do standup comedy on the side for clean, family-friendly audiences and corporations.
Tell us about yourself
I was a teacher for over a decade. While teaching, I saw so many things come down from district, regional, and state heads of education regarding bullying prevention and social/emotional learning. And, I saw so many things either not work or actually make things worse. When I brought my concerns, and possible solutions, to my administration, I was told that I was "just a music teacher" and I needed to stay in my lane. After that, I went back to my room and began writing my first book. Now, seven years later, I'm about to release my 9th book and continue to impact audiences around the US.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Doing work that I enjoy, with a schedule I control while being able to feed my family.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Yearly income is not guaranteed. Every day is a hustle.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Faith. My personal belief is that obedience to the Lord is the biggest key.
- Zig Ziglar said when you help enough other people, you'll get what you want. Always have a servant's heart and mindset. A huge ego is poison.
- Put in the long hours. Make the sacrifices. The first 2-3 years are the hardest. If you can make it through that, you can make it through anything.
