Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Delna Patel, Founder of Choc Oh! Toronto Inc., located in Thornhill, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I started Choc Oh! Toronto in 2020 when the pandemic hit, and so did my need for freedom and creativity. Choc Oh! is all about celebrations, sweet cravings, and happiness which was much needed in that year.

I create customized and unique chocolates and cakes with innovative flavors and textures that are handcrafted with premium quality ingredients.

Tell us about yourself

My name is Delna, and I am a baker and chocolate lover. I spent my childhood sitting on the kitchen counter, fascinated by the sheer love my mother baked my birthday cake. I would lick the remains of the bowl clean with an immensely satisfied and chocolaty face!

My journey with chocolate and baking began since.

I was lucky to pursue my passion by studying and working in France. After having worked for someone else for almost a decade, I felt the creative need to express myself through my work, and that's when Choc Oh! was born.

The look of happiness and excitement when a person sees their special customised cakes or chocolates and the satisfaction in their first bite makes it all worth it.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Every small step in my business journey has been a big accomplishment. Right from incorporating my business and being able to afford big kitchen equipment out of the sales to having my products in different stores around Ontario, it's been an amazing journey.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Having a work-life balance is one of the hardest things. Even if you're not physically working, your mind is constantly thinking of to-do lists, orders, and deadlines, and there's never a dull moment.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just start- There will never be a perfect time, place, or perfect way. You just start and work towards making it perfect.
  2. Work hard- There's no way around it.
  3. Be patient- Be it a human being, plant, or business, it takes time and effort for it to grow and bloom, be patient and consistent with your work success will follow.
