Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Laura Sage, CEO of CHILL, located in Chicago, IL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Whether in-person, remote, or a bit, we help you support mental well-being in the workplace. We put tools and resources in your hands to help employees feel less stressed and more mindful—and in turn, be more productive, better communicators, strong leaders, and sharper talent.

Tell us about yourself

I created CHILL when I couldn't find a modern meditation studio in Chicago. I was the Director at a hedge fund for over a decade. I am also the Founder of the Lynn Sage Breast Cancer Foundation, which funds innovative breast cancer researchers and their education. I had two jobs and was always stressed out. Realizing I wasn't alone and that many professionals were craving techniques to help manage stress and anxiety, I created CHILL in 2017.

CHILL Anywhere, a customizable B2B app that supports employee wellness through live and on-demand mindfulness-inspired classes, were launched in 2019. The CHILL team and I are dedicated to making mental well-being support accessible to everyone.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Assembling such an exceptional team of people with a shared mission to bring less stress and more mindfulness into this world is, by far, my most significant accomplishment as a business owner. We have a diverse team with innumerable skills. Collectively, the CHILL team is an assembly of dedicated, collaborative, productive, and compassionate people.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Working 24/7 is a demanding schedule. Carving out time for self-care is challenging.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Think about what you want to be doing in 5 to 10 years. Does your current plan align with your vision.
  2. Perform a scenario analysis. Torture-test your business model.
  3. Surround yourself with people that are different than you. Different skills. Different points of view. Different networks.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Being a human is challenging these days. Show compassion for yourself and others.
