Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Cheryl Riggen, Founder of coaching BEYOND borders LLC, located in Gulf Shores, AL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business, coaching BEYOND borders LLC, is a leadership training, mentoring, and coaching business. Learning and growing in leadership is the key to reducing stress and increasing influence. We assist front-level and middle management leaders with targeting and acting upon the individual leadership skills that will increase effectiveness and well-being.

Tell us about yourself

Throughout my career serving in various leadership positions, I enjoyed assisting people with growing in leadership. Before retiring, I completed an Executive and Professional Coaching program and became ACC certified by the International Coach Federation to start a leadership coaching business.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I've been in business for two and a half years now and would say my greatest accomplishment so far is defining why and what I do—my mission and vision. Discovering what makes me unique from others in the same market is a process. Many entrepreneurs start off wanting to serve every type of person, which results in too broad of an audience. Having too wide of an audience makes it difficult to create effective messaging and impactful products and services.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things being a business owner is time management. While working in a corporate environment for 36 years, I utilized all sorts of project management, planning, and organizing tools and processes to keep the team and me effective and on target. It is funny, but beginning as an entrepreneur, I did not consider managing my time using these methods, which causes a lot of wasted time and money. Over time, I bought all types of software to assist me with growing the business. I was filling my days with activities that did not lead to completing the next most important step that would take me closer to achieving my long-term goal.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Before building a website, take time to define why your business exists, what your business does to solve your customer's problem, and define your niche and your avatar. This will assist with determining the website structure and design best for your business. It will save time and money.
