What's your business, and who are your customers?
Brain Engineering Laboratories is my business. My customers are highly visual children and adults with trouble with verbal attention-memory processing and communication.
Tell us about yourself
I started in 7th grade teaching a blind child to tap dance. Then I did 2 doctorates and a 5-year postdoc in neuroscience and how the brain works so I could help people.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment was helping my own son Whitney who had the worst brain problems I had ever seen. We could scream in his ear, and he didn't hear, and then he heard too much and was banging his head- He was diagnosed as severely multi-handicapped and mentally retarded. He now runs an IT program and has a degree in chemical engineering and an MBA in logistics. He runs in long-distance races and has a great girlfriend.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I had training and experience that was different from others who were quick to criticize. However, I continued to follow best practices and built an international business through those times.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Passion and love for your job are key. Doing great work comes first, and money will follow. Make sure you have a solid budget to ensure your revenue is greater than expenses.
