Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Hugh Sinclair, Founder of Chef Irie Spice, Inc., located in Hallandale Beach, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Chef Irie Spice, Inc. is a personal chef service that caters to individuals and families for in-home services for private homes or in AirBnBs. We also provide private chef catering for private parties in homes, on Yachts, etc.

Tell us about yourself

Starting the personal chef services became necessary as working in restaurants at the time was becoming volatile and unsure. Creating a pathway seemed the logical outlet for income. Being able to create something new with each individual client is motivational. Each client is different. Working in new and different spaces allows for inspired creativity. Getting paid your worth is also a motivating factor.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Since becoming a chef and starting the business, I've gotten personal awards, traveled, participated in cooking competitions and food festivals, and cooked for celebrities and individuals of note. Being the host of a Caribbean cooking show - Taste The Islands with Chef Irie - featured on PBS and CREATE TV has definitely been the biggest highlight.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Having to deal with slow periods can sometimes cause a certain amount of anxiety. No two days, weeks, or months are ever the same.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know exactly what you'd like to do and do the research, then put in the time.
  2. Take your time growing your business. Grow at the speed that makes sense to you and your business model.
  3. Don't do it for the sole purpose of making money. No sense in losing your soul, right?
