Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Eve Bergazyn, Founder of Chef Eve, located in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a personal chef, caterer, and cooking instructor. I do in-home meal prep, in-person cooking classes (at clients' homes), and parties. Customers range from busy parents to single people who want to eat healthily and are tired of ordering out.

Tell us about yourself

I went to culinary school in 2008 after helping a friend with a supper club in Brooklyn. I loved the adrenaline rush from coordinating several people and the controlled service chaos. I also love food! I've worked in a Michelin-starred kitchen and celebrity chef-owned restaurants in NYC.

When I was chef at Vesta, an Italian trattoria, we were named in Zagat's top 50 restaurants in New York. I'm motivated by positive feedback from clients, the changing seasons and produce at farmers' markets, and the myriad cuisines in LA.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I've cooked for celebrities and non-celebrities, but the most rewarding part of my job is cooking delicious food for people with many dietaries, like allergies and intolerances. It's so satisfying to care for people who often feel left out (or unwell) and feed them. I also love helping people celebrate life's milestones - happy celebrations are the best!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Saying no. The most challenging part is taking care of every business element, from bookkeeping to cooking.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start small.
  2. Specialize.
  3. Stay flexible because opportunities will present themselves, and you must adapt.
