Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Patty Post, Founder and CEO of Checkable, located in West Fargo, ND, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Checkable; we're empowering moms to make clinical evidenced-based decisions and see a provider from the comforts of home for herself and her family.

Tell us about yourself

I worked in the business of healthcare and medtech innovation for years, but it was as a mom of three that I experienced the burdens of the healthcare system. Let's face it, the healthcare system isn't just fragmented, it's broken, and I felt that every time one and eventually all of my children had the symptoms of strep throat. In my mind, I think it's easier for parents to check symptoms at home and see a provider via telehealth. But there's a lack of at-home diagnostics to accomplish this, so I decided after researching the market I'd be the perfect woman for the job, and that's how I created Checkable. Every single day I wake up feeling inspired that I'm making a change in healthcare for the better.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is being in business today and seeing our clinical trial through to completion. No one has ever done clinical research on a layperson using a strep test in the home, and we - our team accomplished it; it's a huge win!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The most challenging piece for me is also the most rewarding, the people. People management isn't easy. Creating something from nothing and directing others to complete something or create something isn't an easy task as a founder and CEO when I'm doing it all for the first time too!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

My favorite advice is:

  1. Never peak; the best is yet to come, and as a founder, you need to continually get a little bit better every single day.
  2. Everything is figure-out-able. Don't stress and get yourself worked up; think of the worst-case scenario, be thankful you aren't there, and then figure it out.
  3. Success loves speed. You must take imperfect action to keep moving ahead.
