Chatting with Wanda Duncan of Black Women Travl

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey by launching a travel community, but not sure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Wanda Duncan of Black Women Travl

What's your business and who are your customers?

I've created community through a group, a weekly podcast, and an annual conference for Black women travellers. It's been my mission to create conversations and resources to help Black women embrace wholeness, travel better, longer, and make money online.

Tell us about yourself

I'm the tenth child in my family and after experiencing the death of my mother and sister six days apart, I was on the path to quitting my job at CNN and traveling full-time. I wanted to give myself the opportunity to fully explore all of the things that brought me alive.

I've been traveling full-time since 2016 and have been able to create the space to help other Black women who are also interested in this kind of lifestyle have a community to reference and get the support they need emotionally, logically, and strategically to live lives they'll be proud of.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The weekly podcast has been a joy to produce. There are now over 100 episodes sharing the real journeys of women who have had to work through their fears and imagine a way forward for themselves.

And I'm also really proud of the annual conference I started planning for in 2019. I love creating resources and opportunities for others to deep dive into relevant info and build confidence in getting paid.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Navigating the business world can be tough. You have to wear so many hats if you want your work to reach people until you can afford to hire professionals. Being seen can be challenging.

What are the top 3 tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

It's really important to work on yourself and through your fears. Put your work out there without requiring it to be perfect. Rest. Most of your brilliance happens in the shower or during a walk. Being in front of your computer doesn't mean you're being effective.

If there was one thing you could do repeatedly to help grow your business, what would it be?

Make space regularly for you to see and hear yourself clearly.

What are some of the things you put in place to maintain a healthy work/life balance?

I never sit in front of my laptop until I'm ready to at least try.

Who are some of your favorite entrepreneurs and why?

I admire those who I'm shoulder to shoulder with in my industry.
