Interested in starting your entrepreneurial journey in writing and content marketing, but not sure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Emma Sloan of The Wee Writer, based in Victoria, Canada.

What's your business and who are your customers?

The Wee Writer is a boutique content marketing agency that specializes in done-for-you content writing and editing so that your copy has more impact, with less work.

Tell us about yourself

I founded The Wee Writer in 2015 after witnessing the amount of time teams (and solo biz owners) spend making just enough content for their marketing to stay afloat.

My motivation for offering my services is knowing that, every day, my output makes it so teams and business owners can reallocate their time to what they do best: running their business.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The Wee Writer has produced quality work for 100+ brands across 5+ countries, including partnering with award-winning brands like Art Fresh Inc.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Whether you're a team leader or running solo, business owners are expected to be everything at all times: a project manager, a strategy curator, a social media expert, a content marketing whiz.

As a service provider, I've learned to niche down to better serve both my clients and my mental health.

What are the top 3 tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

1) Join multiple online and in-person networks of likeminded people who you can turn to for mentorship or inspiration, like subkit.com.

2) Know that, when you're starting out, offering a handful of quality services or products beats offering a multitude of lesser-quality products or services.

3) Familiarize yourself with your region's laws ASAP to better equip yourself for business registration, trademarking, taxes, and everything in between.
