Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in apparel but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Greg Moore, COO of Charlie Hustle, LLC, located in Kansas City, MO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Started in 2011, Charlie Hustle is an apparel company that uses t-shirts as a canvas. With a nostalgic take on designs and buttery-soft garments, Charlie Hustle makes licensed and unlicensed goods for the Middle of the Map. Our customers are primarily female who have ties to Kansas City, but over the past few years, we've expanded our wholesale and online presence to cater to Chiefs and college fans from all over the country.

Tell us about yourself

I joined Charlie Hustle five years ago to help scale the business and expand the brand. I love working on something new every day, and Charlie Hustle allows me to learn and continuously grow in ways that my past jobs did not. There's also a strong team feeling at Charlie Hustle that truly motivates me to perform my best.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Establishing Google ads in 2018 and growing that channel in the last few years. Honorable mention to growing our college licenses, which have included Nebraska, TCU, Illinois, Oklahoma, and others that we've wanted for years.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Protecting the team's, as well as my own, mental health. We started a 4-day workweek last year, which has helped, but the constant work that has to be done as a small business leaves little downtime. With the pandemic and other variables outside of our control, it's increasingly difficult to ensure the team is protecting their mental well-being.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Culture > Strategy.
  2. Form a strategy/roadmap. If you're trying to tackle more than 3 things per day, you'll fail.
  3. Be transparent. We share revenue goals and numbers and nearly everything else with our team. It allows them to see what we're doing well and where we need help.
