What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm an Author, Motivational Speaker, and Founder of Growing In Love Together. Growing In Love Together isn't just a business but a movement. A movement that inspires moms to love their family beyond the surface level and aim straight for the heart using the 5 Love Languages. Loving your family using the 5 love languages will strengthen communication, love, and understanding.
Tell us about yourself
In 2011, I decided to leave the military because, on my last deployment, I couldn't answer the question asked by the caregiver caring for my daughter while I was away-- "What is your daughter's favorite food?". I knew then that I had to get out if I was going to have a better connection with my daughter than my mom had with me. When I left the military, I did everything with her, such as taking her to the zoo, joining the PTA, walking her to school, and feeding her good food. On May 24, 2013, after an interview for a job I was sure I had in the bag, I got a phone call from my daughter's school saying that my daughter said she wanted to harm herself. My daughter also expressed that she felt I loved her brother more than her. I couldn't quite understand why she felt that way when I left the military for HER. After taking parenting classes and discovering the 5 Love Languages, I realized I didn't love her in the way that her heart best-received love. I was focused on giving her things and spending quality time, and she craved hugs. Learning about the 5 Love Languages helped me understand how to love her better. Over the last decade, I've loved my family through the 5 love languages, and seeing them respond positively keeps me going and inspired me to write the 90-day guide!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is self-publishing my first book! The book is a 90-Day Guide for moms to connect on a deeper level with their daughters through the 5 love languages. Each day spells out a task you can do in under 30 minutes to connect on a heart level.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things about being a business owner is being consistent in a way that works for me. I have a full-time government job, and finding time to be consistent when I can be is sometimes a bit challenging.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Don't overload yourself with information and advice; just start! You can always switch things up when something isn't working.
- Do what lights you up! So often, we do what others may think is a good idea while ignoring what fuels us most as an individual.
- Don't try to do everything at the same time. Take your time.
