Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in marketing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tiff Carey, Founder and CEO of CHANGEMAKER Marketing, located in Redondo Beach, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We offer email sales funnel strategy and copywriting, brand messaging and website copywriting for startups.

Tell us about yourself

I founded Changemaker when a few of my girlfriends were starting their businesses. Since I’d been in sales and marketing for nearly 20 years, they asked for sales strategy and marketing advice. Changemaker came organically from these conversations. I wanted to create a place where startups could easily access resources and services to bolster their email marketing and websites – both of which I believe are primary channels of any successful company.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

It might sound trite, but my biggest accomplishment as a business owner is staying in business. Whether the client business takes a dip or my online course sales don’t meet my goal, it’s the determination, tenacity, and grit I’ve managed to drum up when I need it most. The power to remember my “why” and use that to move forward when I’d rather call it a day –that’s huge. That’s my biggest accomplishment thus far.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The buck starts and stops with you. You’re the marketer, the salesperson, the service provider, the financial advisor – the list is endless. You make all the decisions. That can be incredibly challenging and even lonely at times, so I try to lean into a few support groups I have and advisors I trust. It’s ok to ask for help even when you run the show.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Remember your why. Reminding yourself why you chose to start a business, make a product or offer a service can be the most grounding and gratifying way to ensure you keep moving forward.
  2. Don’t give up. When it gets hard – and it will – don’t toss in the towel. Take a minute, take a breath, remember your why, and get back to it. So many new businesses fail largely because their owners decide to quit. Don’t quit.
  3. Ask for help. Being overwhelmed can be a real problem, but the solution is simple –ask for help. One person could do everything, but they can’t do everything well. Use your talents for the things that light you up, and ask for help on the stuff that grinds you.
