Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Joyce Kao, Co-Founder of CHANCE, located in Alhambra, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Chance is a lifestyle sporting goods brand that creates gear for the game, apparel, home goods, and accessories. Our customers come from all walks of life and have a love and appreciation for sports, art, streetwear, food, and culture. They're do-good disruptors that set the trends and care about giving back to their communities.

Tell us about yourself

I've always worked for companies that gave back to causes and missions they cared about. Having a goal that's outside of myself gives my work meaning and purpose. When I first started Chance, this was the root of our why. We wanted to create a different type of sports company that focused on celebrating exactly who you are instead of fitting into a box of what an athlete should be and look like. Chance promotes self-expression at every turn because it leads to self-confidence and self-love, which is at the core of everything we say, do, and create.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Learning to practice what I preach! There are so many ups and downs in owning a business, and I'd be lying if I said it never got to me. Learning to navigate through tough times, never giving in to doubt, and always choosing to move forward has been my biggest accomplishment.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

It differs day by day, but the thing that comes up most is not having enough time. So planning and time management are key.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Always believe in yourself; you'll have to be your biggest cheerleader throughout the journey.
  2. Ask for help when you need it and have a solid group of people around you. Who you're surrounded by and listening to matters.
  3. If things get tough, always come back to your "why." Why did you start this? Why does it matter to you? This helps me recenter.
