What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a writing instruction and assessment coach. I teach teachers across the curriculum how to empower students in writing while helping teachers reclaim their personal lives.
Tell us about yourself
My motivation comes from a testing-focused education system that is desperately in need of reform. Like my fellow English teachers, I was drowning in my work, and my health and personal life were being adversely affected. I began to research the problem and implement out-of-the-box thinking. As the systems I implemented began to produce better growth and learning in my students, it also relieved me of the burden of constant lesson planning and endless grading. Then I noticed that it's not just an English teacher problem but a problem for every teacher whose students write.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I'm still in the startup phase of my business, but my greatest accomplishment thus far is when teachers go from being overwhelmed and defeated to confident and thriving.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Again, I'm still in the startup phase, so I'd have to say the biggest problem is doing all of the work on your own. It's a day-and-night grind that involves a lot of trial and error, and you take an initial hit when you're spending your own time and money to get things off the ground.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Think long-term and learn from your mistakes. Never allow negative self-talk to get you off track. Don't chase the money; pursue your passion and strive to improve the lives of others.
