Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Chad Aboud, Founder of Chad Aboud Consulting, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I help Lawyers uncover their natural traits + skills so that they are more successful and feel happier in their careers. I offer this through 1:1 Coaching, Small Group Coaching, Team Workshops, and Speaking Events. My customers are Lawyers (typically between 5-15 years into their career), Law Firms, and Legal Teams.

Tell us about yourself

I'm a former General Counsel and Law Firm Lawyer with a passion and purpose to help Lawyers uncover their natural traits + skills so that they are more successful and feel happier in their careers. I began my career in a national Law Firm where I saw how we could use our natural skills and human connection to drive more successful, impactful, and fulfilling careers. But I didn't see these ideas being taught or implemented. So I left BigLaw to travel the world, searching for new ways to tap into our natural characteristics and the power of human bonds to fuel career success.

On my return, I moved in-house, using what I'd learned to create meaningful relationships with business teams and drive their goals forward. When I became General Counsel of an international portfolio of tech companies, I leveraged my natural skills and the power of relationships to build a thriving Legal team, integrate Legal within the business teams, and implement Legal Technology that revolutionized the company's operations.

But my passion and purpose kept calling. And that is what fueled me to launch Chad Aboud Consulting. What motivates me most each day is seeing my customers awakened to the amazing skills already within them that they may have undervalued their entire careers.

Through our work, they create clarity and confidence in how they want to create their greatest impact, and we've developed ways that they can easily bring more of themselves into their careers. It's an unbelievably powerful journey to support.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The feeling of knowing that I am creating the greatest impact I am meant to create. There are so many skills we can be trained to be good at, but doing what it is you believe you are uniquely meant to give feels like something very different than any of my previous career accomplishments.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Making peace with knowing you're always learning. You're always going to be refining your offering, your msg, how you prioritize your time, refining your client mix. It's much more difficult than doing a 9-5 job and being told all of these elements, but it's also extremely rewarding once you make peace with it.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Reflect on what gives you good energy. These are likely topics you think about all the time without trying to think about. Which means you probably know a lot about them.
  2. Then map that passion to your current skills or skills you have the desire to grow.
  3. Start building a basic website to see if that overlap actually resonates as something you'd want to spend your career doing because an idea can take on a different life once we bring it into the world. It might feel the excitement, or we might realize it's just a casual hobby for us. The magic is in the initial building. That helps give us clarity.
