Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Brandi Muilenburg, Founder of Cesira Olio D'Oliva, located in Meridian, ID, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Cesira Olio D'Oliva is an Italian extra virgin olive oil company. We have partnered with two family farms in Italy to grow, harvest, and bottle our amazing current-season oils. As a nutritionist, I wanted to get pure, fresh, healthy Italian EVOO into the hands of as many families as possible.

Tell us about yourself

I have worked in health care for over 10 years. Following my own health issue, I began diving into food and nutrition, specializing in gut health. I obtained an MBA degree and started my health coaching business, Functionally Autoimmune. This also leads me to pursue a functional nutrition certification and focus on gut health. I then went on to start a PhD degree in Functional Nutrition. The love of health and nutrition lead me on the path of olive oil because it is something I love and strongly believe is one of the most powerful superfoods on earth.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think business ownership is a big accomplishment in itself. It takes time, energy, and dedication to your business. However, it would not be possible without the support of my amazing family and my wonderful business partners.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things as a business owner is growth. It happens on its own time. It is constant hard work and dedication to your business and being able to go with the flow. Some months are fast and chaotic, and others are slow and scary.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do it! If you think you want to start a business, know that it is hard work and is not a guarantee. Many people shy away from starting a business because of fear, but if you really want it, take the leap.
  2. You have to also love your business, have value and meaning behind what your doing. Don't do it for money; it will fail every time if this is your sole motivation.
  3. Find partners that have the same ideals and values as you do, and that see how amazing you and your business are. Remember the people that were there for you in the beginning and the ones that were not.
