What's your business, and who are your customers?
We are a craft brewer/distiller of some of the finest beers and spirits in North America. Our beers are better enjoyed locally, but our Single malt whiskey can be enjoyed locally and globally. We are also producing some of the finest de-alcoholized beer in the world. We also produce and package products for other companies within this industry too.
Tell us about yourself.
I have a passion for craft beer and fine spirits, and I have worked in the industry for 34 years. I have lived all my life in Vancouver, but this industry has allowed me to travel to see other cultures and their perspectives and passions. I enjoy being hands-on when brewing beer, and it's still a passion for creating new styles and getting compliments on a well-made beer.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Creating a successful business that is recognized for its quality. We have won awards at the highly prestigious World Beer Cup, Canada's Brewery of the year twice, and many awards for our whiskeys and gin.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
We have to work on this business daily to keep it viable. Margins aren't big because of government taxation in the alcohol business. We try hard to retain a sizeable staff in this ever changing world because execution is critical in our business.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Passion for your business.
- If starting up, have a year's supply of projected revenue saved until cash flow starts to happen.
- You have to work on it every day.
