What's your business, and who are your customers?
I have an in-home bakery that specializes in cookies, cakes, and any other kind of sweet treat you can think of. My customers are people who have a sweet tooth and enjoy desserts made with love.
Tell us about yourself
I am a practicing attorney by trade, but I really enjoy baking. It's a hobby that relaxes me, and it's something that brings me peace. I love challenging myself to create new treats and designs. My hobby turned into a business from there, and I've never been happier.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment would be selling over 500 orders since beginning my business a couple of years ago. That's a huge accomplishment for a home baker that sells baked goods while still practicing law.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The hardest thing for me is having to turn down orders. In the last year or so, I have gotten really busy, and at times (especially around the holidays), I am not able to fulfill everyone's orders. Since it is a one-woman bakery at the moment, I can only take so many orders, but I would love it if I could be able to.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Don't give up if things don't immediately take off. Building a business takes time and patience, so just stick with your plan.
- Find your customer base, not everyone will be your target customer, and that's okay.
- Customer service can make or break a business, so always remember to treat your customers like you would want to be treated. Word of mouth can do a lot to help or hinder your business so make sure you are treating your customers with the utmost respect and communicating with them.
