Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Codey Dingfield, Freelance Cinematographer of CD Media, located in Rochester, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a freelance videographer and editor. My customers are non-profits and beverage and creative marketing agencies! Recently I've been shooting content for Hulu, Disney, ABC, and a few other big companies!

Tell us about yourself

I started almost ten years ago. I was a tour photographer, and I traveled to the United States. I originally thought I was going to be in a band as a drummer when I was just in college, but once I went on tour doing media... I knew I wanted to make creating content my career, and everything has been up from there!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment easily has to be landing Disney gigs. I never in a million years thought that small town I would be working with Disney.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing is the mental battle of "should I just get a normal job?" and "when am I going to get my next paycheck?" I've been super blessed to continue to grow in my career, but it isn't easy by any means.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do some free small work for small businesses. It will pay off building a portfolio.
  2. Reach out to people on LinkedIn; I feel like people aren't utilizing it as well as they could. Find marketing directors, add them, and ask if they are interested in doing video content!
  3. Take classes, network, and go to training. Go to trade shows!
