What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a freelance writer and editor. Generally, I work with businesses across industries to create interesting public-facing content and B2B communications, but I also work with authors and publishing presses to finalize manuscripts for publication.

Tell us about yourself

I first started freelancing as a side job while working as a bookseller back in Georgia in 2019. When the pandemic hit, I put more of my focus into freelance work and eventually left my bookselling job to freelance full-time.

I'm motivated by both a love for creating interesting work and a love for being in full control of how I do my job. Beyond that, freelancing has allowed me to move across the country to be with my family
that freedom is the best part of the job.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I'd say one of my highlights was presenting about freelancing as a guest speaker for the Kansas Authors Club 2022 convention in Lawrence, KS. In smaller terms, I think I would count the establishment of my website as a major accomplishment that has hugely benefitted my business.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Paperwork! So much paperwork. As a freelancer, I have to track my finances, contracts, project timelines, and deliverables completely independently, which can be frustrating and time-consuming.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Create a concrete plan that you can reference frequently.
  2. Be prepared to change that plan to match your needs as you grow.
  3. Dedicate yourself to your business with the same level of professionalism that you would for any career. Respect yourself as a boss.
