Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Casey Williams, Founder of Casey Williams Co, located in Medaryville, IN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own a non-traditional accounting firm. We do bookkeeping, taxes, and payroll for clients around the country. Our clients are service-based businesses. We pick up clients where they are and take them where they want to go. Most clients come to us embarrassed as this is usually the last part of their business they get in order. We have no judgment, and we help them to get compliant and achieve their financial goals and dreams.

Tell us about yourself

I was working for a traditional accounting firm. The one your parent went to, so you took your stuff there too type place. I could tell clients were frustrated and lost, and I knew there had to be a better way, so I told my husband I wanted to start my own firm. I think he thought I was having a midlife crisis. That was in 2015. We now own the block, are the largest employer in our town, and have clients all over the country and even a few in other countries. The look on clients' faces when they reach their dream keeps me going each day. I love to teach and coach business owners.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment has been to break the mold of a traditional accounting firm. We sell the consulting in addition to our bookkeeping and tax, and that is worth gold to a business owner.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest part of owning a business is not being able to be everyone's friend. I have to be the bad guy sometimes and tell clients things they don't want to hear or, worse yet, tell them they are just wrong.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Done is better than perfect. Hire what you are not good at, and guard your closest circle of friends closely.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

The journey of a business owner is not a sprint. Enjoy the journey.
