Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Phillip Lovelace, Founder of Carrie Eats, located in Elkridge, MD, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is an elegant private dining experience for couples celebrating special occasions and different milestones in their lives. These celebrations include birthdays, anniversaries, proposals, new jobs, new babies, etc. Think of this as a date night on wheels; I go to your hotel, Airbnb, or residence and cook you and your significant other a three-course meal, provide background music and decorate your table with a centerpiece and a variety of different decor to set the mood for the night. I also take pictures and video clips throughout the night, creating your own special presentation video of the experience. I provide all food shopping, clean-up, and utensils, so it's a worry-free service. The only thing the couple has to do is come and have a great night, creating memories that last forever.

Tell us about yourself

My business is named after my late grandmother Carrie Lee Lovelace. She is the reason why I started it in the first place; I took her death hard and wanted to do something that would allow her to move on while still putting smiles on everyone's faces. I used to watch her in the kitchen cooking for my family and me every night, and I loved it. I picked up a few of her recipes and made them my own. Whenever someone mentions her name when they talk about my business, I feel she is still here with me. One day, I was sitting at my desk; I wrote my idea for the business, came up with a logo, did some market research, and started putting funds into my business to bring it to life.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a  business owner is loyal customers supporting my vision, which brings me so much joy. That is why I am always thinking of new ways to grow my business by offering additional services to my clients with the best possible experience. Since starting my business, I have added three additional services, and the response has been great!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest things about being a business owner are the long hours you have to put in, not allowing stress to get in the way of your work, and ensuring you have a great work-life balance. Even with these struggles, it makes it all worth it when my customers are happy. Family, friends, and co-workers have a huge support system that keeps me motivated.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

My first tip would be to always remain professional no matter what, even in the most difficult circumstances. My second tip, do your market research and observe trends while determining your target audience. Lastly, never give up or doubt yourself. Your dreams only come true once you make that first step to make things happen.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I'm excited to see what new heights I can push my business to; my business wouldn't be where it is today without the love and support I received from the community.
