Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in beauty and cosmetics but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Carolyn Kelley, Independent Sales Director of Mary Kay, located in Ponte Vedra, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm an entrepreneur with Mary Kay skin care, body care, cosmetics, and fragrance and my best clients are those with skin and all ages.

Tell us about yourself

I began my business to be able to raise my own children while working from home. It's been so fulfilling to spend so much time with them to shape them for who they have become. Each day I'm motivated to help others have the same freedom to work where they want and when they want.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I've been so grateful to have led my team to sell millions while allowing them to keep their priorities of Faith, Family then Career. Earning 10 free cars has been such a blessing to our family. But the highest honor Mary Kay has bestowed was being nominated by my peers for the Miss Go Give Awards for my character and heart to serve others.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

New business owners tend to struggle with their time and money management, while seasoned tend to struggle with keeping their vision and focus. I love teaching entrepreneurs how to have success despite these obstacles.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Listen to mentors who have been in your shoes and succeeded with aligned values.
  2. Trust your instincts but keep being a student. School's never out for the pro.
  3. Discipline with your time actually gives you more freedom in your personal life. Plan your work and work your plan.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Most people in my field do this part-time to take the edge off of their bills or fund their retirement. Don't be afraid to give it a try; never give up, have a great attitude, and trust that most mentors have your best interest at heart.
