What's your business, and who are your customers?

Bright Star Diversity Consulting will guide you through the process of defining your DEI goals identifying your gaps, and improving the culture of your company as a whole.

Tell us about yourself

I am Caroline King, Ph.D., MHA, PMP, ACND-W, ACDEI. I am the Founder & President and also the Director of Bright Star Diversity Consulting. Bright Star is an organization that seeks to help address the challenges experienced in workplaces to create a great workplace for all. In particular, we strive to address the challenge of diversity and inclusion in the workplace and educational institutions by bridging the gaps and educating those ready to make positive societal changes.

As a self-motivated professional, I pride myself on my success over 15 years of career experience in the corporate environment. During this time, I experienced the nature and complexity of the marginalization of diverse populations in the country. I also realized that many individuals in an organization feel invisible and resign, knowing they will be treated in a particular way because of what they look like or represent. This exposure inspired me to start Bright Star and use it as a vessel of change. Leveraging my vast experience and encounters while climbing the corporate ladder, I am determined to educate people on the importance of diversity and inclusion. I carry my life experiences with me every moment of the day as an African American Neurodiversity woman. Tapping on the limitless potential of people, my team provides education for children to adults, companies, and educational institutions. I enjoy meeting people where they are, sharing knowledge, and building infrastructures within businesses so that all employees feel safe mentally and physically.

At Bright Star, we are 100% dedicated to driving positive societal changes through diversity and inclusion education. Our staff has a unique mix of team members with different cultural backgrounds. This aspect, combined with our educational background, allows us to tackle issues from all angles putting ourselves in a unique position to understand and strategically create solutions for complex and sensitive issues.

Born in Florida, I moved to Wilmington, NC, four years ago. I have two daughters in elementary school who keep me busy and inspire me to drive forward diversity and inclusion work, both in my community and on a national level, through my consulting work. Keen to self-improvement and development, I hold a Ph.D. in Business Administration and Strategic Leadership. I am a strong proponent of Nelson Mandela's saying, "Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world."

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Standing up a viable business by myself with no partners or investors. I use my education, experience, and ingenuity to build something I own.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Being solely responsible for generating business and the reasonability of supporting my staff's livelihoods.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Leverage your passion.
  2. Do your research.
  3. Build a strong foundation and infrastructure.
