Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Carmen Martinez Jover, a children's books author and fertility coach based in Mexico City, Mexico.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I write kids’ books to share about diverse families and modern types of conception. These books help parents explain, in a loving and easier way, how their family was formed. I also offer fertility coaching. My customers are people wanting to form a family. I give the individual support during their fertility journey.

My children’s books are directed to parents who need support in sharing with their children how their family was formed. Nowadays, families are formed in many diverse ways; you have single parenting, same-sex parenting, and heterosexual parenting. My customers are people who have struggled to form a family, many with prior infertility struggles.

Tell us about yourself

What started off as my worst nightmare became later my biggest blessing and my business. I just wanted to be a mother, and I kept on having miscarriages. I lost a sense of living, and I could only see my happiness in the future with a baby. So my inner journey started, and I learnt to value what I had and to put goals in the future but to be happy today. When I became a mother after 18 years of marriage, I had to share a shortcut with other people. On my infertility journey, I learnt so much that I just had to share it.

My next challenge in life was to share with my daughter that we had adopted her. I discovered how storytelling made it so easy, so I started writing stories to help parents share how their family was formed. I realised that there weren’t enough kids’ books on diverse families. I was where my clients were, I know how it feels, and I am passionate about finding ways to make shortcuts and make this journey to parenthood as easy and loving as possible.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Knowing that my work transforms lives, that I can give them tools to overcome fears and make their journey easier.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I would say that becoming a workaholic. Since I don’t feel I am working, I would go on and on. So many ideas, so much passion for reaching more people that one needs to learn to balance life with oneself and loved ones as well.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don’t overthink; just launch it, and don’t wait for it to be perfect. It will develop and grow like a pregnancy.
  2. Listen to your heart (not your mind), trust in your project, and take action.
  3. Connect to the original intention/energy of your work and make pathways for it to expand and reach out to help more people.
