Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kristine Miguel, Founder of Caritas Company, located in Calgary, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I teach creative entrepreneurs to take control of their finances and improve their money mindset so they can build profitable businesses.

Tell us about yourself

I wear many hats (and sneakers) - I'm a mom, wife, and small business owner. Years ago, I had a cushy, well-paying corporate job, but I wasn't fulfilled. I longed for the freedom and flexibility to work on projects I'm passionate about and with folks who inspire me.

As a classic type-A-risk-averse accountant, it took me a long time to get over my fear of the uncomfortable and unknown. In 2015, I started Caritas Company as a side hustle, and in 2018, I finally took the leap! I dropped out of Corporate and dove into helping creative entrepreneurs and small biz owners feel that much more empowered with their finances.
Caritas, in Latin, means LOVE. Love is what gives meaning to my work.
What gives me life… Real connections, innovative collaborations, and building community.

Music is my love language, so you'll often hear me quoting song lyrics (Rap and R&B, in particular), and I'm always ready for a dance party.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I've helped over 140+ business owners in the past two years to be more confident and intentional with their money through my signature online course (Bookkeeping Bootcamp) and VIP coaching program.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

There's a saying that goes: "I didn't want a 9 to 5; now I work 24/7." Being my own boss is amazing, but sometimes it feels like I'm working 24/7 - either I'm working in the business or thinking about the business. So I often have to schedule extended breaks to give my brain space to breathe and be creative in other ways.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Build a network and cultivate those relationships. Word-of-mouth business is very much alive, and your reputation is everything.
  2. Perfection is a trap. Launch imperfectly, gather data, iterate, then do it all over again.
  3. Hire a good accountant.
