Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in web designing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Carissa Erickson, web designer based in Saskatoon, SK, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I design Showit websites for coaches & creatives who want to elevate their brand and build their dream client base.

Tell us about yourself

I'm trained as an Engineer, but I'm creative at heart. My website design business is a true mix of both of those things. I love that my business allows me to combine strategy and structure with creativity and design.
Every website I create is structured strategically for conversion and also creatively designed for connection. And I get to bring that engineer-level efficiency to my design process. In only two weeks, I can take a cringy website and turn it into a polished and professional website you'll be proud to share!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishments as a website designer are the successes my clients have. When their new website ranks on the first page of Google, when they sell out their programs, or when they fully book out their services because they have a polished and professional website that attracts their dream clients - that’s success for me as a designer!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

It's a big adjustment going solo and not seeing work friends every day. There are days when it's hard to work on my own with no one to bounce ideas off of or take a coffee break with! It's been super important for me to connect with other entrepreneurs through group programs, masterminds, and online co-working groups.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just start! You can plan and research forever, but the best way to get clarity is to try something and learn as you go.
  2. Keep going. It will probably feel like you’re bumbling along for a while - just keep at it and allow yourself time to grow into it.
  3. Have a great website! It’s super important to have a strategic website that’s designed to reflect you and your brand, connect with your ideal clients, and position your business for success.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Get help sooner than you think you need to. Getting stuck on random business tasks is such a momentum killer. Learn from someone who’s already done it, or hire someone to do it for you so you can focus on what you do best.
