Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Emily Frank, founder of Career Catalyst, LLC., located in Denver, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The traditional way of mapping your career can often leave quirky or global-minded people feeling out of sync and lost. For many, it just doesn't work. And that's where I come in. It's my passion to help funky, original, global-minded individuals find meaningful work or more joy within the work they already have. I work with those who have been judged because of their hair or clothing, their "ethnic" names, and their gender presentation so they can find meaningful, satisfying work without compromising who they are.

Tell us about yourself

I became a career counselor after years of feeling lost and unsure of what I wanted to do when I grew up. At a friend's suggestion, I started seeing a career counselor, and I quickly realized that the lifeline she was giving me was what I wanted to offer to others. I went to grad school and have been working in the field every since-- about 15 years now. I love helping people realize that the gifts they have to offer the world actually can be welcome and appreciated.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I love public speaking, so the training I have done with businesses, including LinkedIn Learning and several nonprofits, has been really satisfying.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I really struggled with juggling all the tasks at first and needed a lot of help getting things sorted and prioritized. One of the best things I did was to hire a business coach who has helped me navigate all the many, many moving parts.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start by talking with your local SBA/SBDC.
  2. Start a bank account specific to your business.
  3. Commit fully and passionately to the business's success.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I have never taken a single business class in my life. If I can do it, so can you!
