What's your business, and who are your customers?
I own Southern Roots Vegan Bakery alongside my husband Marcus. We are a black owned online bakery that specializes in recreating southern classics with a plant based twist. We ship nationwide and wholesale to retailers across the country. Our customers are anyone who is looking into introducing more plant based options who might be nervous to dive all the way into veganism but they don't want to miss out on desserts.
Tell us about yourself
My grandmother is a big motivator in my business and work ethic. When my husband first went plant based I was my grandmother's full time caregiver so I had her transition to plant based meals alongside with me. She was my original taste tester when I started creating plant based desserts. Seeing her face when we tell her about the orders we receive and the people who love the cake I named after her brings her to tears. It makes my day.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Our biggest accomplishment was being nominated as one of the best vegan bakeries in the country by the top vegan publications. It came as a shock to us and it really solidified for us that we were on the right track and path.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
In the beginning it is a grind and you are working non stop it seems like 24/7. You have to make a lot of sacrifices to really bring your dream to reality. Consistency wins the game.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
