Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in pet care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Baoquan Lu, owner of Canin-Felin Express, located in Longueuil, QC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Our store sells and promotes holistic and natural pet foods originally only made in USA and Canada. Our customers are really animal lovers from local communities.

Tell us about yourself

I am a zoologist and nutritionist. I used to work in the zoo for ten years and worked as a research director assistant for seven years in one of the biggest pet product businesses. I often answered a lot of technical questions from the customer service department. I found a lot of pet stores were missing professional staff to help their clients. In essence, I decided to have my own business to directly help and educate animal lovers by using my knowledge and experience for the wellbeing of pets.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The clients trust me and my business. I have been contributing my knowledge and experience to help animal lovers to save or extend their pet lifespan and improve the quality of life of their pets. A lot of my clients saved a lot of unnecessary veterinary bills, and I recommended the best pet foods to their pets with high quality and reasonable expenses.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Sacrifice a lot of time for the family, but I made a lot of good friends too.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Know what you are doing, be patient to build up the business, and be honest to your clients when you try to sell something.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

In running a small business, you must be a good person with a big heart and willing to help people.
