Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Camille Leon, Project Director of Holistic Chamber of Commerce, located in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I run the Holistic Chamber of Commerce. My primary customers are holistically-minded professionals, practitioners, business owners, and resource providers. We also serve consumers who are looking for holistic products, services, and solutions.

Tell us about yourself

When I first started the Holistic Chamber of Commerce, there were two seeds. One was that my co-workers had no idea how to find quality holistic wellness providers (i.e., acupuncturists and chiropractors) or why I preferred those techniques over conventional western medicine. The second came later when I discovered that most holistic entrepreneurs are very good at what they do and need help with all of the other aspects of being in business (marketing, bookkeeping, administration, etc.).

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

To have created a network of members, friends, fans, and followers all over the world. It's amazing to be able to increase awareness and education regarding holistic specialties and provide access to trustworthy, dependable wellness providers. On top of that, to have a network of holistically-minded business support professionals available is likewise rewarding.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

In my case, having to cover payroll and the extra expenses that are attached to having staff. It's an ongoing commitment necessary to support our members and chapter presidents and build our public presence on an ongoing basis. I couldn't do this alone.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Stay supported! It is too tempting to 'go it alone.' Especially for those who work in home offices, it can be overwhelming and easy to think you have to do it all. You don't. Find your tribe and connect with them.
  2. The online world matters. You don't have to be everywhere, but you do have to be findable and accessible. Can people find you on social media? Does your website include your phone number and/or email address? What directories are you listed in?
  3. Focus your efforts where it's best for you. You don't have to be on every channel all the time. You do need to find the 1-2 platforms that are a natural fit for your style, your product/service, and your potential customers/clients.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

If you are in the holistic, green, or eco-friendly space, we'd love to meet you! Being in business is like living life; there are ups and downs. Enjoy the ride!
