Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kevin Hartley, founder and CEO of Cambio Roasters, located in Isle of Palms, SC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Cambio Roasters is in the coffee business. Specifically, we're a new national brand of K-Cups. It's a very exciting opportunity because, on the K-Cup grocery shelf, there is no mission and values-driven K-Cup brand that people can really fall in love with. That's the unmet need Cambio Roasters fills -- the best tasting, most generous, and easiest-to-recycle K-Cup available. We say we sell "Eco-Friendly, People-Powered, Profit-Sharing, Coffee Pods."

Tell us about yourself

I first heard the phrase "triple-bottom-line" in 1994 and have been obsessed with businesses with missions that matter ever since. I feel that businesses that truly care play a critical part in solving the world's most intractable problems.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been helping the people who work for me have more professional and financial success than they ever thought possible.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Mastering the multi-variant recipe that allows the business to be in the very small percentage of those that succeed.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure there is an unmet need.
  2. Make sure your offering is unique in ways the customer values.
  3. Stay very flexible and constantly tune your offering until you have a product/market fit.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Always do what you love, and you'll never work a day in your life.
