Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Silvana Echeverri, Owner of Cambie Kids Physio, located in Vancouver, BC, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am the owner of a pediatric physiotherapy clinic in Vancouver called Cambie Kids Physio. It was the fourth Kids Physio location in Canada, and now there are 13 across the country! We offer physiotherapy treatment for babies, kids, and teens for a wide variety of conditions, including developmental delay, neuromuscular and genetic conditions, sports injuries, coordination, and gross motor skills, and many more!
Tell us about yourself
I moved to Vancouver to complete my Masters of Physical Therapy at UBC. While in school, I heard of this amazing clinic called Kids Physio, where I could combine my two passions: kids and physiotherapy. As someone who had plenty of physiotherapy treatment as a child, I could not believe there was a place designed just for kids, where physio could actually be fun! As soon as I graduated, I got a job as a physiotherapist at the Fraser and Surrey Kids Physio locations. After a couple of years working, I became the clinical manager. A couple of years later, I decided it was time to become a clinic owner and expand this amazing service to even more kids and clinicians.
It has now been over three years since we opened the Cambie location, I am still practicing as a clinician, and I absolutely love treating children and helping them reach their physical goals. There is nothing more rewarding and motivating than the smile on a child's face after they achieve something they had been working hard toward! I also love teaching and mentoring other physios at my clinic and continuing to grow our profession.
I have so much love for this clinic that allows us to have an impact on kids' lives every day and that allows pediatric physiotherapists to follow their dreams! I absolutely have the best job in the world!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I think my biggest accomplishment as a business owner is creating a workplace with an amazing culture, where we are all excited to come to work and help kids crush their goals. Having decided to become a clinic owner has certainly been a challenging road, but when I look at all of the kids we have helped and all of the physiotherapists that get to build their careers here, I feel an immense sense of accomplishment.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest part of being a business owner for me is being able to fit everything I want to do into the week. I want to be a great entrepreneur and business owner, and I also want to be a great mentor and teacher while also maintaining a clinical caseload and being able to offer evidence-informed care to my patients. Wearing all of these hats while trying to maintain a work-life balance is certainly challenging, but I wouldn't trade this opportunity for the world!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Find yourself a solid support network. I definitely could not do what I do without the whole Kids Physio team behind me!
- Recognize that, as a business owner, there will always be things outside your control, and you cannot plan for every possible scenario. Learning to roll with the punches is crucial!
- Love what you do and make sure that your own personal core values and beliefs match your business's so that you can avoid inner conflicts.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
I am so fortunate to have found Kids Physio and to have had the opportunity to carve my own path within this amazing organization. I am beyond grateful for everything I have learned and for everything I have yet to learn! This has been an incredibly rewarding experience, both personally and professionally, and I feel so thankful for it all.
