Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Gabriel Comtois founder of Café Kujira, located in Montréal, Québec, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Small crafty coffee roasting company. Customers are people looking for specialty coffee roasted with passion and attention to detail.

Tell us about yourself

I started working in the coffee industry in Wellington (New Zealand), then in Melbourne (Australia), and in Bordeaux (France). I discovered what amazing coffee truly is back in NZ and AUS. Then got interested in the roasting part of the industry. Three years ago, I moved back to Montréal and started Kujira as a home roasting business. Learning more and more each and every day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Starting the business. As little as it was back at the very beginning.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Accepting that not everything will be as perfect as desired all the time.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start.
  2. Continue.
  3. Ask for/accept help from others.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

A whole lot of people will help you along the way. Be grateful and respect those people. You will owe them a big part of your future accomplishments. One wo-man band doesn't exist.
