Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Wilson Smith, Co-Founder of Cabinet Startup, located in Orlando, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Cabinet Startup is the best in the world at helping tradespeople and entrepreneurs start and scale local trades-based businesses. We're passionate about revolutionizing the trades. In the last three years, we successfully launched over 50 locations that produce over six figures annually, 4 of which produce over seven figures annually. Our partners, on average, are producing over 10k a month in revenue within 90 days of starting.

Tell us about yourself

My partner Steven and I have been working in the trades for several years. He ended up finding Cabinet Refinishing by accident and scaling his business to over 500k in the first. I had been working in solar, and we were both convinced that the opportunities in the trades were massive. There is a legitimate shortage of skilled workers, and many of those workers who have the skills - haven't developed the same level of skill when it comes to running their business.

We're motivated by showing the world there is another way. You don't have to be a Unicorn Tech startup to have a thriving, highly profitable business. There is an entirely untapped market in the trades, and we've used that market to create highly successful businesses all over the united states.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Our biggest accomplishment as business owners has been creating freedom for others. We have incredible stories of people like Charles, who had to miss all of his children's sports games because of his job. Within three months of working with us, he'd tripled what he was making at his job... and had the freedom to coach the team. Stories like that are what inspire us to keep helping people.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the biggest challenges that come with being a business owner is the fact that you're responsible for both building and operating the business. You have to create it, test it and improve upon it - while simultaneously continuing to keep it going. It can be really tough... and that responsibility is something that you often can't put down. Most people don't understand that a business owner's work doesn't stop when the business does.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

This is one of our favorite subjects because this is what we specialize in:

  1. Client Acquisition is the most important part of your business; without clients, your business is actually a hobby.
  2. Knowing what not to do is almost as important as knowing what to do. There are a thousand shiny things that want your attention; you have to stay incredibly focused on the right things.
  3. Knowledge without action is meaningless. Learn what you need to succeed, and then take the action steps to make it real.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Everyone deserves financial freedom, but not everyone is willing to take the risk. Believe in yourself - if others have done it, you can too.
