Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Joey Buyske, Founder of Buyske Photography, located in Billings, MT, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I run a photography business, so my customers can be anyone who is looking for a photographer for portraits, real estate, sports, etc.

Tell us about yourself

I have been interested in photography my whole life but never really took the time to learn the details of the craft. It had just been a hobby of mine. When I was thinking about starting a side business for my teaching career, I thought about photography. From that point on, I was laser-focused on learning everything I could and applying what I had learned. I photographed everything and anyone who would let me. Once I felt like I had a product that met my standards, I started charging for it and went from there.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is starting a business period and finding some modicum of success with it. Each year I have been a "professional," I have earned more money and clients, and it continues to grow.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing for me is putting myself out there to try and get more clients. I am perfectly comfortable behind the camera, but as soon as I have to step out and try to entice clients to choose me in a very saturated market, that is when I struggle.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Read a lot. There are so many books/articles out there about starting a business, marketing, social media, etc., that you're bound to find a few that will resonate with you. Take what you need and discard the rest.
  2. Don't be afraid of rejection. Everyone has their preferences, and what you offer may not be their cup of tea. Don't worry about it. Just keep after it, and success will come.
  3. Word of mouth is king. You can pay all you want for Facebook advertising, Google ads, and spreads in a local paper/publication, but none of it will beat word of mouth. Be someone other people want to work with, and the rest will take care of themselves.
