Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sola Togun-Butler, Founder of Butterfly Counseling Services, P.C., located in Forest Hills, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I established Butterfly Counseling Services to make mental health services accessible and affordable while challenging the stigma associated with receiving mental health services. Our mental health is just as important as our physical health, so taking care of it and receiving services without shame is important. My clients are people seeking to improve their mental health by decreasing symptoms of depression and anxiety, breaking intergenerational trauma, and learning effective coping mechanisms to deal with the stressors of life. My clients are also people looking to improve their interpersonal relationships and self-actualize to be the person they want to be.

Tell us about yourself

I have been a licensed psychotherapist for over 15 years, and I enjoy working with a diverse client population. I have a Bachelor's degree in Psychology, a Master's degree in Social Work, and Ph.D. in Education. My diverse academic background and real-world experience have allowed me to connect with my clients and create a safe environment in which they can address their therapeutic goals. I am very passionate about mental health, and it makes me so happy to see more and more people reaching out for mental health services despite the stigma associated with receiving those services. That motivates me to keep building my practice to provide the services our clients need.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner was starting out as a solo practitioner and, in less than a year, growing into a group practice consisting of amazing therapists who are making a difference in the lives of their clients daily.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing about being a business owner is finding time to take care of yourself while meeting the multiple demands of running a business. I have since learned effective self-care techniques that I use on a daily basis to achieve the balance of taking care of myself while running a business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Write down your goals and objectives. Remember the saying that a goal without a plan is a dream.
  2. Seek out like-minded people who will support your entrepreneurship journey and be your loudest cheerleader.
  3. Redefine failure so you won't be afraid to fail. Failure should be seen as a lesson and not a hindrance.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Your mental health matters! Don't wait until you break down to seek mental health. Just like you stay on top of your physical health, stay on top of your mental health by learning effective coping skills and mechanisms.
