What's your business, and who are your customers?
Butter & Creme specializes in custom desserts, pastries, cakes, and cupcakes with a menu focused on trendy flavours with Jamaican fusion. I love to incorporate my Jamaican culture in aspects of dessert and menu creation, showcasing fun, cool and yummy sweet treats of the month! My customers are typically persons who love to celebrate milestones and achievements with eye-catching sweet treats! As a small business owner, my clients are my livelihood.
Tell us about yourself
I am originally from Jamaica, where I studied Food Service Management. It was then that my love for baking developed. I always knew I wanted to be a Chef- hence the degree choice, but the Baking aspect captured my heart! I started baking and never looked back. I started my small business back home and decided to continue once I got here. It's hard being new to a country and starting from scratch, but my will and drive to be successful and my goal to open my own café keep me motivated- keeps me pushing!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
While I am not near where I hope to be as a small home-based business, I am particularly proud of securing 2 degrees within my field and stepping out of my comfort zone to pursue my dream.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The most difficult thing would be the unknown. The nature of my services currently only allows for custom services doesn't readily secure a steady income for myself or my household. Each month is different.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Ensure you have a written business plan (Always start with a clear plan for your idea).
- See if your business venture is viable in your area.
- Do what you love. Life is too short to waste time unhappy.
