Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Wayne Herring, Founder of Business Builder Camp, located in Schuylkill Haven, PA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is a group coaching/mastermind program for entrepreneurs who are building a business and life that matters. The definition of a Business Builder is tough to put our finger on, but we know it when we see it. It’s more than someone who started a business. It’s more than someone who is finding success in that business. It’s more than someone ambitious. It’s something unique and special.

Business Builders create and build because they believe that what they have to offer will add tremendous value to others and the world. They look at a blank canvas and see possibilities. They are capable, innovative, and brave. They are also deeply committed to their families. They know that it is possible to be a successful business owner and an excellent partner, parent, and provider to those they love. They are not afraid of hard work. Business Builders are high performers who embrace it and love the process of building better businesses AND relationships every day of their lives.

Business Builder Camp is NOT industry-specific. It IS an intentional connection with others for growth and support. Accountability, expertise, and empathy weave in and out of the community in a way that holds one another up.

Tell us about yourself

To say that I get it is an understatement. I have lived and worked through the good times and bad as a business owner, husband, parent, and provider.

I grew up with strong male role models who had entrepreneurship running through their blood. I learned from them - the good and the bad. But all of that didn’t stop me from making my own set of mistakes. I still had to make and learn from my own, sometimes catastrophic, errors of judgment.

Now, I am building a business just like you. I am proud of the growth I’ve accomplished within myself and my business. I also know that my growth is a journey, not a destination and that I need mentors, team members, coaches, and trusted friends to help me stay the course.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My wife and I have raised four children as I helped my father build and sell his business for seven figures. We started an organic farm together, created a community of good food consumers, and then transitioned to homesteading. Katherine and I have been married for 20 years, and it's been hard, but it's good. I've stayed in the good physical condition and done a lot of internal work as I recovered from alcoholism. I find joy in many moments most days.

Our business builder coaching business has flourished here on the farm. My accomplishment is that family and farm AND my clients. I step back and let my clients shine. They are on the stage, and I'm in the audience, smiling. In our Business Builder Camp community, I lead but love to step aside as others coach fellow group members, push them, cheer for them, and lift them up. Our community and life are my biggest accomplishments.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Isolation. Being alone or feeling alone. And I don't want to do it alone, and I haven't. I continually seek out mentors, coaches, teachers, mystics, sages, and communities in me to grow and learn. Keeping going with grit, determination, and optimism is hard because life is challenging, and building a business is challenging. Having others lift me up has made all the difference.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start. Take the first step. Do the doable and commit. Stop thinking and talking about it.
  2. Recommit to your dream and vision daily and take another step forward. Get up when you stumble.
  3. Find someone or a whole community to keep pushing you back into the arena.
