Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Devan Kline, Co-Founder & Visionary of Burn Boot Camp, located in Cornelius, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

As the Visionary of Burn Boot Camp, our business is focused on providing women and their families with personalized, results-driven workouts and community support. Our members are women, men, and kids of all ages and fitness levels who are looking for inspiration, transformation, and untimely, the empowerment they seek to lead successful lives.

Tell us about yourself

I've had a passion for fitness and helping people transform their lives since it transformed mine. I was a skinny kid from a broken home, and fitness gave me a vehicle to earn a division 1 baseball scholarship to Central Michigan and even to play for the San Francisco Giants baseball organization. I started franchising Burn Boot Camp in 2015, and each day I'm motivated by the stories of our members who have transformed their lives through our program, as well as the amazing team of trainers and staff who are dedicated to helping them succeed.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

As a business owner, my biggest accomplishment has been building a brand that truly changes lives and a team to support it. Seeing our members achieve their goals and become healthier, stronger, and more confident is incredibly rewarding to all of us. We are obsessed with the experience members, Franchise Partners, and their teams have with our brand, and we cherish the trust that binds these relationships to the highest regard.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

We are a radically transparent company. One of the hardest things about doing business this way is having to make difficult decisions without being able to explain the "why" behind certain sensitive issues, such as hiring and firing people. People have loved ones to care for on the other side of their paychecks. Therefore, we want our company to have the information, knowledge, and transparency needed to always keep its family's future vision in alignment. Finding this line is a difficult dance and one of the hardest elements of our business philosophy.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

If you're looking to start, run, and grow a business today, my top three tips would be:

  1. Focus on building a strong brand that resonates with your target audience. Be clear on what you stand for, and make sure everything you do supports that message.
  2. Prioritize your team. Your employees are your most valuable asset, so invest in their growth and development and make sure they feel valued and supported.
  3. Stay adaptable and be willing to pivot when necessary. The business landscape is constantly changing, and you need to be able to adjust your strategy and approach as needed to stay ahead of the curve.
