Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Cameron Conklin, Owner of Bull City Gardens, located in Durham, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Bull City Gardens is a design and build business specializing solely in vegetable gardens. We custom design small urban gardens and homestead infrastructure based on our customer's needs wants, and personal preferences. We also custom build the property. Our business aims to take the headache and confusion out of starting your own garden and growing your own food. There's a lot of information out there, and it's all, for the most part, correct. We simplify the process by building, educating, and offering support. Gardening is a life skill; everyone should know how to grow their own food.

Tell us about yourself

I started my first garden ten years ago and fell in love with it. About six years ago, I thought it would be cool if there were businesses that installed vegetable gardens, but I left it at that. In 2019 I bought a book called "100 side hustles you can start today". Halfway through the introduction, I realized I already had the idea, so I purchased the website. People motivate me. I enjoy seeing the final product and my customer's faces. I love seeing them succeed in gardening and learning a new skill.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The biggest accomplishment for me as a business owner has been leading me to adapt and evolve the business. I had different ideas when I started, which has changed so much. I like where it's at now and where it could be.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

You have to do everything. Social media, accountant, marketing, sales, customer service, project manager, estimator, laborer.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just start. If you have an idea and you like it. Go for it. Don't worry about failing. I fail every day.
  2. Make sure it's something you can be passionate about. If it gets hard, you need to like what you're doing.
  3. After doing it for a while and honing in on your craft, don't be afraid to raise your prices. We all start at the bottom, usually undercharge. Knowing your value and worth as you get better and gain more experience.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Get outside and start gardening. Even a small container on the deck is a start.
