Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Will Frith, Founder of Building Coffee, located in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Building Coffee is a coffee roasting company offering wholesale services and support for B2B and easy online ordering for B2C. We are a roaster at origin, intending to bring better coffee to more people...

Tell us about yourself

The communities that form around cafes and the people within the coffee industry are the best in the world. Of course, I love delicious coffee, but the people I work with every day keep me engaged and striving to do better work. The coffee industry affects every aspect of life and the economy, from farming to agricultural science, design, architecture, community, and hospitality, at home and at work.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My team. They are hard-working and share the same goal of bringing better coffee to more people. I can rely on them to make good decisions and provide excellent customer service.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The business - regulatory requirements, financial realities, sales and marketing, competition.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find mentors as early as possible. They will continue to be your most valuable asset.
  2. Simplify as much as possible. It is easy to offer a huge assortment of products in an attempt to increase sales, but maintaining integrity and quality is what will sustain you in the long run.
  3. Hire based on attitude and personality. Experience helps, for sure, but the technical aspects can be taught. It's nearly impossible to train someone to have a good attitude.
