Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Becky Taylor, co-founder of BS Communication Strategies, located in Mountain View County, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We coach people to communicate better! Our customers are businesses, groups, teams, or individuals that are keen to learn more about improving their communication skills. We know that the most common problem people face is having uncomfortable conversations, dealing with negativity online, or being in a team culture that is unrewarding. We know that building communication skills can help with all of the above. Our teaching is skills-based, fun, and designed to improve people or groups, beginning with the skills they already have and refining from there. A common theme we hear in our feedback from clients is they can't wait to build their skills, and they are so happy to know that they can improve from where they are at.

Tell us about yourself

This business is co-owned by Becky Taylor and Sage McIntosh. We are both Master of Arts, Professional Communication graduates from Royal Roads University. We met as adults pursuing education while working full time with kids at home! We became dear friends in the program and decided that we would like to work together. Four years after we graduated (June 2020), we started BSCS. By June 2021, we had incorporated, and Becky began operating BSCS full time. Currently, this is Sage's side hustle!

What motivates us? Our nerdiness in all things communication! We have studied the science behind communication and, combined with our experience, see the value of coaching it. We are motivated by a desire to support people and teams that are looking to increase their skills and be coached in a thoughtful, authentic way. We are communication Nerds!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We have learned a lot about business and have been able to apply that to being in the middle of a very successful first year. We are proud of where we are at and look forward to growing more.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The uncertainty of when your paychecks come in. This is the difference between being self-employed and being an employee. Working for yourself, you rarely have the steady, every two weeks, the wage that you would as an employee.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find resources and information about owning a business.
  2. Find other professionals to help you: bookkeeping and accounting, marketing, and legal counsel.
  3. Create a plan built on your aspirations, and stay the course!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

We are so excited to be on this business journey and look forward to continued success, meeting interesting people, and celebrating the important role communication plays in our everyday lives.
