Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Natasha Helwig, Founder of Broken Heals Inc., located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a women's wellness coach and facilitator. I work as a guide with women to help them unpack their relationships with themselves and others through one on one coaching, group workshops, and therapeutic events. Oh, and sometimes I write ;)

Tell us about yourself

I started my business mainly out of the need for more community and safe spaces. I didn't feel that there were enough safe spaces for Black women to show up to and be soft, vulnerable, and transparent about their stories, relationships, and lived experiences. I am motivated each day by the impact I am making and the storytelling. I love to learn about people, their experiences, their ideas, and their love, and I am fulfilled by being able to act as a guide for these people along their healing journey.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment has been in garnering trust and helping my clients feel seen, heard, and understood. From a more tangible business perspective, it is also in building a social media following that is interested in my thoughts and ideas that I share through my writing and using social media to convert followers into clients.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner is in wearing all the hats of the business, especially as a social entrepreneur. When you are focused on the impact and wanting to serve people, it can sometimes feel daunting to have to get into the numbers, shift your focus on sales and handle all the legalities and details of the business. Often times I've found that when I've led my business, becoming too overly focused on wanting to 'hit numbers' rather than help people, my business hits a wall; however, as long as I stay focused on the impact, the income will come.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Keep your offer simple. As a creative, we often want to add all the things and do all the things. Pick one thing and give that one thing your focus for at least 6 months before shifting to another project.
  2. Stay focused on your why. Why are you choosing to start and run this business? Even when shit gets hard, your 'why' will drive you.
  3. Discipline over motivation, but also knowing when to rest. Motivation comes and goes, but building discipline and consistency will help you continue building even when you don't feel like it. And ALWAYS give yourself grace and know when to rest, don't burn yourself out for a dollar.
