Speaker From the Heart - Brock Tully

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Brock Tully, Founder of Brock Tully Press, located in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a keynote inspirational speaker and author of 8 books... all people are my customers.

Tell us about yourself

I was depressed, suicidal, and addicted in 1970. Climbed on my bicycle before people were touring and rode 16,000 km 'around' Canada, the U.S., and Mexico on a 12-inch journey from my head back to my heart. By becoming clean after that trip, I'm motivated every day by listening to and following my heart and doing my best to do what I can to create a kinder world free of bullying, abuse, addictions, unhealthy relationships, depression, and other social issues.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think (hope) I've inspired many people to follow their hearts through my three bicycle trips 'around' North America (50,000Km) to raise awareness for a kinder world and to prevent bullying— through my Keynote Speaking at conferences, schools, businesses, etc., and by organizing many concerts and events:

  • World Kindness Concert Kindness Rocks - in schools to prevent bullying.
  • One-of-a-Kind Stories - a day of people's courageous and inspiring stories.
  • Porridge for the Soul - a breakfast to bring more heart into businesses.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I would say finding and surrounding myself with amazing, heart-centred, and highly motivated workers and volunteers make the journey so much easier and more productive in reaching our goals and visions. The toughest part, for me, is needing to let people go. I always try my best to take the time to talk to those people about what they are passionate about and try to make this change in their life as easy as possible for them to deal with.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be passionate and love what you are doing (the journey) by following your heart and not the results - money and what money can buy!
  2. Surround yourself with caring, kind, & thoughtful people who are self-motivated, excited, and 'on board' with your vision. I want people to work 'with' me and not 'for' me.
  3. Read my books! :-) - just kidding, but seriously, read books, etc., on personal growth so we can change our unhealthy condition and reconnect with our hearts. When we 'pass on' at our celebration of life, no one will mention your marks, trophies, house, car, etc., but they will talk about the kind of person you were.
